Urolithin A (Mitopure)
Urolithin A (mitophagy activator). Aging itself. Reviewed Jul 2026.
Randomised trials show modest gains in muscle strength, endurance and immune markers, but there is no lifespan or disease-outcome data.
What it is
A postbiotic — the gut metabolite of ellagitannins (pomegranate, walnuts) — sold as Mitopure. It switches on mitophagy, the cellular cleanup that clears damaged mitochondria before they sap energy, muscle and immune function.
The evidence
Randomized human trials at 1,000 mg/day: improved muscle strength and endurance in older adults, lowered markers of cellular senescence, and raised CD8+ T cells and natural killer cells (markers of immune aging); one study reported ~10% greater VO2max gain than exercise alone. Available over-the-counter; no hard lifespan or disease-outcome data yet.
What you can do today
The human evidence is early and does not support a general recommendation. If this area is relevant to you, discuss it with a clinician. Products sold in this space are not proof that it works.
